Stratford Upon Avon…Shakespeare's Home
There's no question that his style transcends the ages and his wit, when clearly understood, remains wholly unparalleled. It was a thrill to visit his birthplace and home. As most records that would document some of the specifics of his life were destroyed by fire or time, there's limited documentation of his early life.
It is known however that he was the son of a glover (yes, that's the official title for making gloves!), that he likely had no formal schooling past the typical Primary School level and that before heading off to London in an attempt to make his fortune, he fell in love and courted Miss Anne Hathaway. Her family's well preserved home is the quintessential English country cottage with a perfectly thatched roof and lovely surrounding gardens. After touring Shakespeare's historically staged home with its various rooms stocked with lovely & informative artifacts, we were ecstatic to walk out onto a lawn with live Shakespeare performers ready to take our requests! The window scene from Romeo & Juliet and the ever lively Benedict & Beatrice from Much Ado About Nothing captivated our attentive imaginations. Shakespeare on the lawn in Stratford, in front of his house?! It doesn't get any better for these literature lovers, even if they're still a bit young to fully realize it!
