We didn't realize on one of our evening walks home (the one where we were disappointed to have taken a wrong turn & then the Forum closed on us & we thought we'd missed our window to see it) that we stumbled onto the Circo Maximo...it's wonderful how much can be accidentally discovered in Rome!! More facts on the Circus (Roman style) later; suffice to say that it's massive, and was for the purpose of chariot racing, which was really just an excuse for Roman men to gamble & assert their bragging rights when their rider & horses won. Sound familiar? Nothing really new under the sun. Our kids made the astute observation that George Lucas is a man who knows his history: think pod-racing in Star War's Phantom Menace....& really, today, the same theme resonates & manifests yet again in the Hunger Games. Same story, just clothed in different costumes. Must be something about it that resonates with most of us. Love that they're of age to connect the dots.
Andrew & Camden loved this wide open space to run, chase & race. Daddy was the timer & they ran their hearts out in what was a mostly healthy competition between them. ;-)
It was at this point, as we disappointedly walked further, (the boys, a little slower at this point) that we stumbled upon a street that ran along the backside of the Forum, only we didn't realize it until we rounded a corner & there it was, cast in perfect evening light. So striking & such a relief to me. Even though we weren't at Forum "ground zero," just seeing it from somewhat of a distance, was inspiring & beautiful.
